Had the previously down-to-earth star really taken to the worse kind of whiny, A-lister vanity? What possible reason could the global sex icon have for feeling anything less than gorgeous?
Then we realised he was talking about hanging out with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
So sort of fair enough then, really.
The actor was discussing what it was like to film The Tourist - his latest movie in which he co-starred with Angelina - in an interview with the Sunday Mirror.
"When we were filming The Tourist, Vanessa [Paradis, his partner] and I would often go out with Brad and Angelina. Angie is a stunner, so is Vanessa . And Brad of course. When we all sat together I was the only ugly one. I'm not the spick-and-span kind of guy. To be honest, I don't like cutting my hair or trimming my beard.
"As a teenager I was so insecure. I was the type of guy who never fitted in because he never dared to choose. I was convinced I had absolutely no talent at all. For nothing. And that thought took away all my ambition too."
...and now we're right back to loving to him again. Going on to speak about paparazzi intrusion, Depp added: "I've been very lucky for a good number of years. They've left me alone for the most part. But for their family [Jolie and Pitt], being under that global microscope, and being hounded and virtually stalked, every day of their life is insane!
"There should be laws against that. But Angie and Brad deal with it so well. They are great mommies and daddies. They are great parents, and they do everything they can in the world to be with their kids, and to raise them well and I've witnessed it. It's pretty amazing under the circumstances."
Phew. Seems like Johnny hasn't turned to the dark side of fame after all. Who wouldn't feel a little inadaquate hanging out with Brangelina? The last time we were this impressed with Depp, he was paying a surprise visit to a school.
