It's Julian Assange's own 'tizzy' that bamboozles | David Leigh

The WikiLeaks founder should keep quiet about his private life and let his hugely important work speak for itself

Julian Assange, the beleaguered inventor of WikiLeaks, stood on the Belmarsh courtroom steps and delivered what has become a familiar harangue against those trying to extradite him to Sweden, where he is accused of sexual misconduct. The climax of almost a quarter of an hour of oration came when he complained of "this ridiculous time I have to spend on this nonsense!". Such was his dismissive reaction to a reasoned 28-page ruling by the district judge, Howard Riddle, who no doubt burned some midnight oil composing findings he knows will be scrutinised carefully by an appeal court.

It might have been more diplomatic of Assange to have kept quieter, following a devastating finding in the judgment that one of Assange's fleet of lawyers, the Swedish advocate Bjrn Hurtig, made "a deliberate attempt to mislead the court". It was a striking reminder of the dangers over-enthusiastic solicitors face when they cross the line and engage in media grandstanding.

The issue could not have been more crucial: the Assange team had attempted to give the impression that the Swedish prosecutor Marianne Ny had behaved in an "astonishing" and improper manner, by making no attempt to interview Assange while he was in Sweden, and then unscrupulously chasing after him in England to have him arrested. This false allegation was bolstered with unsubstantiated claims that Ny, the senior sex crimes specialist prosecutor, was a "malicious radical feminist".

Apparently undaunted by the wholesale rejection of his case, Assange shifted tack to mount a lengthy attack against the entire European arrest warrant system, which, as he said, was devised after the 2001 terrorist atrocities of 9/11 to make it easier to bring Islamist suspects to justice in European courts.

He may well have a point about the subsequent overuse and abuse of the warrants. State power frequently needs watching and curbing. But he is scarcely well placed to be a disinterested advocate of British legal reform, while he is himself frantically trying to avoid facing the music in Sweden. Nor do his pious remarks about "our system of justice" make much sense when they come from a peripatetic Australian citizen who has made a virtue out of a nomadic, virtually stateless, existence that circumvented traditional systems of justice.

Assange has now been mired in what he calls this "nonsense" for a considerable time ? since six months ago, when two Swedish women went to the Stockholm police complaining about Assange's sexual behaviour.

This might seem like "nonsense" in Assange's eyes. He has previously said the women got into a "tizzy" and were "bamboozled" by police. He has sought in this way to wage a high-profile information war about what ought to have remained his private life, through hearing after hearing, interview after interview, and has repeatedly tried to blur the boundary between the sex allegations and the attacks on him by US politicians because he masterminded the WikiLeaks free speech exposures . He was at it again yesterday, talking about "the pressure the US brings to bear on the UK, on Sweden and on the media".

Meanwhile, the night before the Belmarsh verdict, the editors of the five international publications involved in the leaks gathered in Madrid. The Guardian, the New York Times, El Pas, Der Spiegel and Le Monde debated before an audience, but with much less fanfare, the real issues thrown up by the pioneering work of WikiLeaks. Has the exposure of the US diplomatic cables made it harder for governments to lie in the age of the internet? How far did WikiLeaks contribute to the online dissent currently sweeping the Arab world? Can Bradley Manning, the US soldier accused of the actual leaking, expect civilised treatment in his military jail? These are the real issues that should be at the front of civil libertarians' minds, not Assange's legal problems. Secrecy

National Tortilla Chip Day 2011

Today is National Tortilla Chip Day, the perfect follow-up from Tuesday's National Margarita Day. You can do more with a bag of tortilla chips than simply scoop up salsa or guacamole.

Make tortilla chip casserole with tortilla chips as a base for condensed cream of mushroom soup, condensed cream of chicken soup, diced tomatoes, meat or beans, milk and cheese. Pop it in the oven and dinner is ready in under 45 minutes.

For a creative change of pace, try Food Network's tortilla-crusted tilapia. This recipe coats tilapia filets with flour, eggs and crushed tortilla chips and bakes for 15 minutes. Use multi-colored chips for a colorful entree.

Spice it up or make it mild but whatever you do, be sure to celebrate National Tortilla Chip Day with a crunch today.

Ozzy Osbourne: still feeling effects of drugs

The former Black Sabbath frontman 'who battled drink and drug addictions for the majority of his career' admitted he often experiences "wobblers" brought on by the LSD, also known as acid, which he took during his wild times with the band.

Writing in his latest column in Rolling Stone magazine, he explained: "LSD is a great time until it isn't. One minute you're running down Miami Beach with a foam finger on your head, the next you're sticking a gun in your best friend's face.

"I still get the after-effects of LSD to this day - I call them my wobblers. In a flash, every little problem freaks me out and becomes the end of the world."

The 62-year-old rocker 'who has three children with his wife Sharon Osbourne, and another three kids from his marriage to Thelma Riley - recently admitted his drug addictions nearly killed him, and he still thinks he is "living on borrowed time".

Ozzy said: "With the drugs, it nearly killed me on a daily basis - I did a lot of heavy drug taking for a long time and I survived it by the grace of God. You might not be as lucky as me - I'm living on borrowed time."

The Stones lawsuit lets slip 2011 tour plans

A lawsuit between Michael Cohl, the man who has produced the Rolling Stones tours for the last two decades, and concert giant Live Nation may have let slip the fact that a Stones tour is/was in the planning stages for late-2011.

The two parties have filed cross lawsuits, Live Nation saying that Cohl breached an agreement he had with the company when he left it in 2008. In the other direction, Cohl has sued Live Nation saying that they had breached the contract and were attempting to interfere with his right to work on the Stones tour set for the latter part of 2011.

The agreement in dispute has Cohl paying Live Nation $9.85 million in installments so that he could retain the opportunity to promote tours by artists like the Stones, Barbra Streisand and Pink Floyd. Cohl still owes Live Nation $5.35 million of that amount which he says he has not paid as the company has not lived up to their side of the agreement. This triggered a letter from Live Nation last February informing Cohl that they intended on bidding against him for the next Stones tour.

It is also known that the Stones are aware of the dispute but do not want to get involved which leads to the question, is a late-2011 tour now in jeopardy unless the two sides can settle their differences?

I'm not immune to the lure of celebrity gossip, but it harms us to read this bilge | Laura Barton

Women have greater access to education, careers and intellectual fulfilment than ever before. So why do we choose to sedate ourselves with this drivel?

'Gossip," the grande dame of rumourmongers, Liz Smith, once noted, "is just news running ahead of itself in a red satin dress." It was Smith's words that came to my mind recently, while watching The Children's Hour, Ian Rickson's exceptional production of Lillian Helman's 1934 play, currently showing in London's West End. It stars Keira Knightley and Elisabeth Moss as two teachers in a girls' boarding school in New England who, through a spot of malicious scuttlebutting by a disgruntled student, find themselves accused of having a lesbian affair.

The play is a cautionary tale of the harmful impact of gossip, of the lingering effects of idle tittle-tattle, and there seemed no small irony in the fact that its stars are two young women who frequently find their professional achievements obscured by our collective obsession with the private lives of the rich and famous. Much of the coverage of the play, rather than discussing their stunning performances or the work in question, has predictably focused on Knightley's recent split from fellow actor Rupert Friend, and the fact that Moss, recently divorced from the comedian Fred Armisen, is a Scientologist.

Few of us are immune to the lure of celebrity gossip. Like many women I know, I find even a casual visit to the Daily Mail website is akin to falling down a rabbit-hole: hours lost in the trials and tribulations of the Kardashian sisters, or the wardrobe choices of Kelly Brook, or in riveting accounts of Britney Spears paying an afternoon visit to Starbucks. And my conclusion is that the mud does stick: I can tell you with some accuracy, for example, the romantic history of Shia LaBoeuf, or the fitness regime of weather-girl Claire Nasir, and I have a working knowledge of the US television series Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, without ever once having seen it.

Gossip has always been deemed a largely female preserve, and there have been numerous studies of women's relationships with hearsay and tattle, of the way it builds our social networks, cements our relationships, of the way we revel in its endless narrative ? the weight gained, lost and gained once again; the bikini shots; the red-carpet outfits; the marriages; the births; the infidelities ? in much the same way that many men (and, yes, women too) relish the rise and fall of a football team and its players. But these days gossip seems to have outdone itself: its magazines (chiefly aimed at a female audience) flourish in a flagging market, while websites such as TMZ broadcast endless videos of Lindsey Lohan buying shoes or Justin Bieber inspecting his nails, and with this increased exposure we have come to believe these are things we have a right to know.

Regardless of whether there was any truth in the allegation that David Beckham paid prostitute Irma Nici for 2,000-a-night liaisons, the footballer's libel claim against In Touch, the magazine that published Nici's story, was thrown out of court this week, with the judge ruling that Beckham was a public figure, and as a result there was a public interest in his private life. Additionally, his legal team had failed to find any evidence of malice in In Touch's decision to publish the story.

Perhaps Beckham, as a man who has at times courted media's infatuation with his personal life, needs to sometimes take the rough with the smooth. But I find it hard to believe there was no malice. And this is what I fear we are in danger of forgetting: that gossip is harmful. And it is harmful not just to those who are gossiped about; it is harmful, too, to those of us who relentlessly consume it.

Nearly 50 years ago, Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique, in which she spoke of the widespread unhappiness and lack of fulfilment of women in the 50s and 60s. "The problem that has no name" was what she called it, and she defined it as "simply the fact that American women are kept from growing to their full human capacities". It was, she said, "taking a far greater toll on the physical and mental health of our country than any known disease".

Times are different now. Women have greater access to education, to careers, to intellectual fulfilment than ever before. And yet now we choose to dumb ourselves down, to subdue our own minds by sedating ourselves with online visits to the Daily Mail and buying gossip weeklies at the newsstand. "The feminine mystique has succeeded in burying millions of American women alive," Friedan wrote in 1963, and there are times when I fear we are doing no better ? burying ourselves alive in a mire of half-true tales about Sienna Miller. We need to nourish our minds, we need to recognise that if we continue to feed ourselves with this bilge, this drivel, then we are imprisoning ourselves. Isn't it time we became less about the red satin dress and more about the news?

Save our forest animals

Last month, I wrote about the threat to our national woodland by the government's proposal to sell off land belonging to the Forestry Commission. Since then we have seen a pause in proceedings, talk of consultations and possible reprieves. Do not be fooled. Our forests are still in as much danger as they ever were. And note, too, the recent concerns voiced by the Wildlife Trusts that the loss of such woodland would affect the red squirrel, nightjars and firecrests, pine martens and goshawks. The fight is far from over.

Nicholas Courtney, Doctor Who's legendary Brigadier, mourned by fans

The Tardis will feel a tiny bit emptier with the passing of Nicholas Courtney, who played the unflappable Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart for more than two decades

News today of the death of actor Nicholas Courtney has struck genuine sadness through the geek community and the world at large. A fine actor and a seemingly genuinely lovely man, he was also the longest-serving actor in Doctor Who history.

His character, the unflappable Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, was one of the most beloved characters in the entire Whoniverse. He made his first appearance in 1969 adventure The Web Of Fear, then a mere Colonel, head of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, the international community's line of defence against alien threats. When the series went Earthbound in 1970, the Doctor was employed by Unit and the Brigadier became central to the series' "Scooby Gang".

The Brigadier occupies a unique position in Who lore. It is the Doctor's defining quality to abhor violence, refusing to use weapons even when absolutely necessary. Lethbridge-Stewart was a military stalwart, his instinct to shoot at the alien threat with a catchphrase of: "Five rounds, rapid!" The two men's differing approaches tested as much as complemented each other.

Famously, in the Third Doctor Silurian story, the Brigadier orders the destruction of the underground Homo Repltilia settlement, to the Doctor's disgust. But he also served as a human, and humane, counterpoint to the Time Lord's alien eccentricities, and the pair developed a professional respect and personal affection.

While circumstance dictated that the Doctor's female companions would come and go on a biannual basis, their bromance was a rare constant in the renegade's life, and when our hero returned to travelling through time and space, the Brigadier appeared alongside every subsequent Doctor from the classic series (barring the sixth, unless we're counting the audio-plays as canon, in which case we'll be here all day).

When Unit turned up again in the Tenth Doctor story The Poison Sky, the organisation had toughened up and skewed its moral compass. "Sir Alastair" as he was now known was stranded Peru during the crisis. The Doctor openly pined for the Brigadier's more honourable way of doing things.

His final appearance on the main show came in 1989's Arthurian Legend-riff Battlefield, where the now-retired Lethbridge-Stewart battled a Jean Marsh-portrayed version of Morgan La Fay alongside the Seventh Doctor. The plan had been to kill the character off, but with all hell breaking loose, his death could only have been an incidental plot point, and producer John Nathan-Turner told Courtney, "If you're going to die, I want your death to mean something." This was how significant he had become, and he was allowed to live happily ever after in his country pile. A year later the series was axed.

Sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor, said Courtney was very proud of the fact that he was the only Doctor Who regular to appear alongside almost every incarnation of the Doctor.

"I remember when they first told me that they were going to bring him into one of my stories, I was delighted ? I was a big fan of his, going back to the Troughton era," McCoy told The Guardian. "I fact, I was over the moon ? which, as the Doctor, was a very easy thing for me to do.

"What I liked about him was that he had such humour in his performance. He was playing the "military intelligence", which is a contradiction in terms. But instead of laughing at the character, we came to respect him. That was because of the man himself. He was great company ? gentle, caring, a lovely man.

"He'll be much missed. Nicholas was a gentleman in the true meaning of that word."

Lethbridge-Stewart returned to the screen one last time in 2008 for a guest appearance in spin-off The Sarah-Jane Adventures. Now a retired General turned schoolteacher, he was called in to help his old friend. The warmth between the two former colleagues, their lives forever fused together by their experiences with the man in the blue box, was genuinely touching.

It was much the same in real life. Courtney knew he was part of something special, and never stopped enthusiastically cheerleading for Who, attending conventions and taking part in numerous Big Finish audio plays. He was rightly proud to be defined by his defining role. The time-space continuum feels a little bit smaller without him in it.

Jack Tweed and Mark Wright facing trial

Jack Tweed and Mark WrightPA

Oh dear, things are not looking good for Essex boys Jack Tweed and Mark Wright - because they are to be tried over an alleged "brawl" outside Mark's nightclub.

The pair appeared at Redbridge Magistrates Court yesterday and pleaded not guilty to using threatening words and behaviour towards 21-year-old builder Tom Grantham.
Jade Goody's widower Tweed, 23, was also joined by his younger brother Lewis, 20, in the dock.

They are accused of joining in a nine-man brawl started by Wright, 24, outside Deuces, the venue he runs in Woodford Green.

Their two-day trial will take place in August and they have been released on unconditional bail until then.

Chanelle Hayes had her say on Mark the other day.

Party Animals

How did he like to party? If the reports are to be believed, Charlie liked to roll with a large stash of cocaine - which he preferred to smoke rather than snort - and a gaggle of porn stars.

What toll did it take? Well he lost his teeth, his work has been suspended and he's no stranger to the US court system.

Is he reformed now? It's way too early to tell, but it certainly sounds like he hit rock bottom, so let's hope the only way is up for Charlie.

Party Animals

How did she like to party? Coke, booze, sleeping pills, maybe even heroin: Li-Lo seems to have enjoyed a bit of everything when she was she was living the party lifestyle.

What toll did it take? Well her career has gone down the pan, she seems to have developed OCD and she's developed a bit of a reputation - to put it mildly.

Is she reformed now? Lindsay was making good progress at the time of writing, but we suspect it's going to be a lifelong struggle for somebody with her tendencies.

Party Animals

How did she like to party? You know that crystal meth stuff that we were warned was going to engulf the UK a decade or so ago, but that never really arrived? Well Fergie used to be addicted to that.

What toll did it take? She was a wretched drug addict, and may have done a wee in her trousers while on stage (Google it).

Is she reformed now? She certainly seems to be, and judging by the phenomenal success of the BEPs, we'd be very surprised if she had much spare time to go on week-long benders any more!

Party Animals

How did she like to party? Cocaine, vodka and doner kebabs. But mostly cocaine, and mostly while locked in her bedroom with grotty ex-hubby Mark Croft.

What toll did it take? Her angry, rambling and incoherent appearance on This Morning was one of the best anti-drugs adverts we've ever seen. And the newspaper sting that exposed her cocaine use ended up costing her an Iceland advertising deal worth millions.

Is she reformed now? She's lost weight, shaped up and has made great efforts to salvage her public reputation. The jury's still out but we're impressed so far.

Party Animals

How did she like to party? The Girls Aloud star appears to have been the life and soul of the party at several exclusive London "celeb hangouts" for most of the noughties.

What toll did it take? Despite her reputation as a caner, Sarah doesn't appear to have ended up in rehab or the gutter. In fact she went all poacher-turned-gamekeeper and ended up opening a bar of her own.

Is she reformed now? She's calmed down, for sure, but we wouldn't go so far as to say she was reformed.

Party Animals

How did she like to party? Nicole had a taste for heroin when she was a younger woman - and worringly seemed happy to drive round LA while drunk or high. She also dated teh late DJ AM for a few years - and he was known to be quite hardcore.

What toll did it take? She got in trouble with the law on several occassions and - of course - ended up in rehab.

Is she reformed? Nicole is settled down with hubby Joel Madden and two kids now, and seems to lead a much more sedate existence.

Party Animals

How did she like to party? How long have you got? Crack, heroin, booze (lots of it), ketamine, ecstasy - you name it, she'd snort, smoke or shoot it. Usually without having washed for days and with rodents living in her hair. She was even filmed snorting coke while on stage!

What toll did it take? The world watched her downward spiral over 2007 and 2008. Her voice deteriorated and her erratic behaviour led to serious fears for her mental health.

Is she reformed? Well, she seems to be off the drugs - but has kept her fiery temper and is still partial to the odd massive booze bender. If there was ever somebody with an addictive personality...

Party Animals

How did he like to party? Back in the 1980s George liked to kick back with a large syringe of heroin, obviously not having seen that episode of Grange Hill where Zammo chases the dragon. Later on in his career he got more into taking cocaine and falsely imprisoning male escorts.

What toll did it take? Aside from his severe heroin addiction and his not inconsiderable criminal record, George has also gained a reputation for being prickly, bitchy and slightly deranged - which to be honest he probably enjoys.

Is he reformed now? We doubt George O'Dowd will ever be completely straight (pun intended), but he does seem to have stayed out of trouble for a while.

Party Animals

How did he like to party? Back in the day it was dope, coke and Es - all washed down with lashings of booze - but after a stint in rehab he moved his addictions on to prescription drugs and Lucozade (no kidding).

What toll did it take? He ended up an overweight, bearded recluse obssessed with UFOs and frightened of human contact.

Is he reformed? It's hard to tell with Robbie whether he's on anythign or not, because he always seems to intense and stary anyway. He seems to be a bit calmer though.

Party Animals

How did they like to roll? Cigarettes and alcohol obviously, but former Oasis stars Liam and Noel are also known to have been rather partial to cocaine and ecstasy.

What toll did it take? They're not the types to ever go into rehab, but we do wonder what effect all the substance abuse had on their fiery relationship and eventual parting of ways.

Are they reformed now? Both are settled down and family men, but we doubt they spend their Sunday mornings at the garden centre.

Christine Bleakley heading back to BBC | Media Monkey

Christine Bleakley is returning to the BBC. Yes, you read that right. But don't worry Alex Jones, she's not coming back to The One Show. Bleakley's recording her new ITV1 gameshow Control at, you guessed it... the studios at BBC Television Centre. When she was umming and aahing last summer about whether or not she would follow Adrian Chiles to ITV to front new morning show Daybreak, or stay at the Beeb on a 450,000-a-year deal and become the face of its Olympics coverage, Bleakley released a statement to say she was, in the words of Natalie Imbruglia, "torn". Walking back through the gates of TV Centre on Wednesday night, with Daybreak not exactly tearing up trees ratings-wise, Monkey wonders if Bleakley will instead be thinking: "I'm all out of faith. This is how I feel. I'm cold and I am shamed."

LeAnn Rimes' Wedding Planning Is 'Chill'

LeAnn Rimes traveled a bumpy road while falling in love with now fiancé, Eddie Cibrian. The singer and the actor were both married to other people when they began their relationship, causing a media frenzy as both of their divorces were played out in the public eye. But now, the happy couple are living under one roof, sharing custody of Eddie's two boys (with his ex-wife Brandi Ganville) and anticipating a lifetime of wedded bliss.

"I'm looking forward to settling down," LeAnn tells People. "Settling into our life."

The songbird says their plans for the big day are in full swing, with both bride and groom sharing the load. "It's an exciting year and a lot to handle, but I've got a good man at my side. So he's helping! He really is the sweetest, most supportive man," LeAnn boasts. "But it's kind of chill. We're taking it as it comes and planning as it comes."

Jimmy Buffett Hospitalized After Fall

Jimmy Buffett was rushed to a hospital in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday (Jan. 26) after the 64-year-old singer fell offstage and remained unconscious for several minutes, according to reports.

Australia newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports that Buffett was just wrapping up the encore of his concert at the Hordem Pavillion and singing the lines, "It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended," when he collapsed into a pit at the front of the stage. Buffett lay on the floor with his head bleeding as paramedics made their way to the venue and concertgoers were urged to leave.

Buffet was taken to Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital, where TMZ reports that the singer is in stable condition and remains under observation.

Rock music promoter Don Kirshner dies

US promoter also worked with The Rolling Stones, The Eagles and Ramones

Veteran US rock promoter Don Kirshner has died aged 76.

Kirshner suffered heart failure in Boca Raton, Florida on Monday (January 17), reports Billboard.

He helped launch the careers of a number of notable acts including Prince, Kansas and The Eagles, and also hosted the television show Don Kirshner's Rock Concert from 1973 until 1981.

Kirshner insisted to bosses that acts on the show, who ranged from The Rolling Stones to ABBA and the Ramones, should play completely live.

Kansas drummer Phil Ehart paid tribute to Kirshner, who signed them in 1973, by saying that the band "owes its 38-year career" to him.

Kirshner's wide-ranging success in the music business earned him the nickname 'The Man With The Golden Ear' from contemporaries.

Donald Kirshner was born in the Bronx on April 17, 1934, the son of a tailor. He had hopes of being a songwriter, and got his start in the music business when he met a brash young singer named Robert Cassotto at a candy store in Washington Heights. They became partners, working on jingles and pop ditties (their first: ?Bubblegum Pop?), but their collaboration ended after Mr. Cassotto ? under his new stage name, Bobby Darin ? scored a hit in 1958 with ?Splish Splash,? which he wrote without Mr. Kirshner.

That year Mr. Kirshner founded Aldon with Al Nevins, who had played in a successful instrumental group, the Three Suns. Mr. Kirshner and Mr. Nevins opened an office at 1650 Broadway ? a block away from 1619 Broadway, the Brill Building ? and soon signed two struggling songwriters, Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. By 1962 they had 18 writers on staff.

The list of Aldon alumni includes Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Neil Diamond, Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. To some degree the company operated as an assembly line: teams of writers in piano cubicles churned out songs that would be recorded immediately, as demos or sometimes as finished productions.

In 1972 Mr. Kirshner began to work with ABC on a live performance show, ?In Concert?; he left that show the next year to begin ?Don Kirshner?s Rock Concert,? which had its premiere in September 1973 with the Rolling Stones. In the 1970s Mr. Kirshner also continued his work as a music executive, signing the band Kansas (?Carry On Wayward Son,? ?Dust in the Wind?) to his CBS-affiliated Kirshner label, but by the early 1980s he had retired.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila; his son, Ricky Kirshner, a producer of the Tony Awards show; his daughter, Daryn Lewis; and five grandchildren.

Poor Liz Hurley discovers too late that Shane Warne had been sending erotic texts to someone else

Oh, who would have thought it would end this way? Liz Hurley leaving Australia a week early, white-lipped with anger, having apparently discovered that Shane Warne cheated on her. Lost in Showbiz's hopes truly soared at the sight of Warne taking delivery of what appeared to be a new double bed, putting salve on his lips, spraying Lynx Africa down his underpants and marching up and down in front of the paparazzi, pointing at his crotch while waving a sign saying I AM GOING TO HAVE IT OFF WITH LIZ HURLEY: perhaps this relationship would be the one that didn't come to a sad end, almost invariably precipitated by the discovery that Warne had been sending erotic text messages to someone else. Lost in Showbiz can only think that its response to his tweet asking followers to recommend "the sexiest place to take Elizabeth for lunch" ? "given your past record, try somewhere with no mobile reception" ? failed to reach him in time.

Peaches Geldof the 'lowest dregs' of celebrity... her words

Filed under:

Peaches Geldof celebrity dregsPA

We always had Peaches Geldof down as some kind of delusional, self-obsessed pseud but apparently she's had some kind of awakening.

In an interview with Heat magazine, the daughter of Boomtown Rat Bob was asked if she considered herself a celeb in her own right.

"I'm known, so I am a celebrity. But I'm the lowest dregs," she declared. "I don't think I'm up there with the greats. I'm no Marlon Brando."

Aww, now we feel a bit sorry for her... but she's right about the Brando bit.

Peaches went on to talk about the paparazzi, saying: "It is annoying and sometimes it's really bad and makes me feel like a prisoner of war.
"I can't complain about it, but I feel like some of the tactics that they use are really wrong. They'll shout swear words or sexual terms for women.

"It's abusive... it's just old perverts in coats huddled round outside a club, looking for Britney Spears's m**ge."

Ms Geldof went on to say that she doesn't "give a f**k" what the press write about her but added: "I read about this person and I'm like 'Who is this girl?

"Who are you, because you're not me and you're really kind of obnoxious'. I wouldn't like me if I'd just read about me in some of the publications."

To be fair, it's not just the mags, Peaches... we've seen you on the telly and you seem kind of obnoxious on that too.

Peaches isn't the only one who's famous for being famous...

Famous For Being Famous

Paris Hilton is perhaps the world's most famous for being famous person. She's managed to carve a very lucrative career out of having the same name as a chain of posh hotels and having a mucky video leaked onto the web.

Famous For Being Famous

Her old pal Nicole Richie somehow managed to become world famous for being the adopted daugther of soul singer Lionel, hanging out with Paris on a reality TV show and driving her car while high on drugs.

Famous For Being Famous

Of course another surefire way to get famous is to start dating somebody who's already famous. Alex Reid won Celebrity Big Brother even though he was a bit of a twit - simply because everybody reads about him all the time.

Famous For Being Famous

Coleen Rooney became a household name very shortly after her childhood sweetheart, soccer star Wayne, did. The young WAG has since managed to become a columnist and TV presenter.

Famous For Being Famous

Does ANYBODY remember why Jodie Marsh is famous? Getting her norks out? Sleeping with people? Being orange? We've no idea.

Famous For Being Famous

Sometimes just dating somebody famous isn't enough, and you have to date somebody famous and old enough to be your grandfather. Just ask Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood's ex Katia Ivanova.

Famous For Being Famous

Of course Katie Price has a number of strands to her career, including modelling, perfume, clothing and books - but there's no escaping the fact that her core job for some years has simply been "Being Jordan".

Famous For Being Famous

Kerry Katona was once in girl band Atomic Kitten, but has long since become far more famous for her turbulent personal life. And just like Katie she earns a lot of money for letting TV cameras follow her around.

Famous For Being Famous

Dancer Kevin Federline gained overnight fame (or was it infamy?) when he became Mr Britney Spears in 2004 - and his unsuccessful attempts to launch a career as a rapper have proved the public would prefer him to remain the ex-Mr Britney Spears.

Famous For Being Famous

Like many celeb offspring Kimberly Stewart has a few job titles: Model, actress, fashion designer - but her primary occupation still appears to be going to parties and being Rod's daughter.

Kerry's on the hunt for a new man

Filed under:

Kerry Katona new manPA

Watch out chaps... Kerry Katona's on the prowl and she's looking for love.

The former Atomic Kitten singer was booted off Dancing on Ice this weekend and, since she's at a bit of a loose end now, she has decided to get back in the saddle and start dating again.

"Everyone's so eager for me to go out and get laid. So am I!" she told The Sun.

And it sounds like Kerry won't have to wait long because she went on: "This bloke chased me down the street the other day for my number.

"Did I heck give it him. I was in a bed shop as well."

Aahh... the old 'never give a man your number whilst in a bed shop' rule.
But while bed shops are out, Kezza's not averse to the idea of speed dating.

"I'm ready to go out and be dated - well, if that's whatthe kids are calling it these days," she told the paper. "I've forgotten what to do. I'd go speed dating for the craic, for a laugh."

Well, she's already tried online dating so why not?

One person who will escape Kerry's amorous advances though is ice-skating partner Daniel Whiston.

She explained: "I've got the most amazing friend in Daniel. No matter how good I've been told he is in bed, I wouldn't do that for anything."

What she would do, however, is return to the jungle - I'm A Celebrity bosses are reportedly trying to lure previous stars of the show back to Oz for a 10-year Z-list fest.

"No one's approached me yet but I would definitely do it again," Kerry said with a hint of desperation. "I saw Ant and Dec the other week and I thought about asking them.

But she added: "I wouldn't do it if Katie Price went back in."

Phew... at least we won't have to suffer both Katie and Kerry come November.

Who would you prefer to see back in the jungle - Katie or Kerry? Let us know below...

Kerry's fortunes may be on the up at the moment but she still tops our list of riches to rags stars...

http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,localizationConfig,entry&id=966259&pid=966258&uts=1298358575

Riches to Rags

Kerry Katona went bankrupt in 2008 when she was landed with a £82,000 tax bill that she'd failed to save for. Things have gone from bad to worse since after she lost her lucrative Iceland advertising contract afetr ebing exposed as a cocaine user.

Riches to Rags

Lindsay Lohan's high-living habits combined with a lack of work have led to persistent rumours that she has gone bankrupt. She was known to have a cocaine habit and is believed to have spent $1m on a single hotel bill.

Riches to Rags

Every wondered why Nicolas Cage is in soooooo many bloody films? It's because he spends money quicker than he can earn it, with a jet, two yachts, three castles and two islands among his impulse buys. No wonder he went bust last year!

Riches to Rags

MC Hammer quickly amassed a $30m fortune after shooting to fame, but his extravagant spending on a huge mansion and racehorse stables contributed to his much-publicised financial woes once the hits dried up.

Riches to Rags

Sir Elton John didn't just enjoy dressing up as Louis XIV, he used to spend like him too - and went particularly barmy after getting off drugs in the 1990s. He famously spent nearly £300k on flowers in the space of just 20 months - during which time he burned through a total of £40m.

Riches to Rags

Former Hear'Say singer Suzanne Shaw just managed to dodge bankruptcy after racking up debts of £200k - and admitted she had to hide from bailiffs. Fortunately for her she won Dancing On Ice and secured a role in Emmerdale.

Riches to Rags

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton must have confused himself with heiress Paris Hilton when he was at college, because he ran up debts of $50k and had to declare himself bankrupt. So you'd think he'd be a bit more sympathetic to certain broke stars.

Riches to Rags

Bez from the Happy Mondays probably doesn't get a lot of royalty cheques for his freaky dancin' - so we weren't surprised to hear he'd gone bankrupt before appearing on (and winning) Celebrity Big Brother in 2005. Unfortunately he didn't seem to get any better at managing his money and went bust again in 2008.

Riches to Rags

Kim Basinger was once the hottest female star in Hollywood and earning big bucks - which may be what made her think it was a good idea to buy a whole town in the US. She took a bath on that and then went bankrupt when a studio sued her for $8m when she pulled out of Boxing Helena.

Riches to Rags

Sharp suits and fancy HGVs don't come cheap, just ask former boxing champ Chris Eubank - who went bankrupt in 2005 owing £1.3m in unpaid taxes.
