Grammy Awards 2011: Five fashion moments

Arrive in an egg, wear top-to-toe leopard ... it's just another average Grammy Awards. Kate Carter picks her favourite fashionistas, from Lady Gaga to Katy Perry's grandmother

1. No yolking, it's Lady Gaga

Last year it was a bacon dress. This year she arrived in an egg. Presumably at next year's Grammy Awards Lady Gaga will be encased in black pudding, with an entourage of 100 tiny baked beans. "This is Nicola, Haus of Gaga: Gaga is in incubation," stylist Nicola Formichetti tweeted, clarifying everything. "Tonight's performance is in collaboration with Hussein Chalayan and House of Mugler. X"

Lady Gaga apparently spent three hours inside the egg, "getting into character". Alas, this did not result in a funky chicken dance. Her Ladyship is, however, now rapidly approaching the point where it will no longer be possible to outdo her last ensemble, and she will be forced to come full circle and turn up on a pushbike wearing a baggy tracksuit.

2. Nicki Minaj

Is it her hair? Is it a wig? Is it safe anywhere near a naked flame? Nicki Minaj's do performs the almost unheard-of feat of coming within a hair's breadth (sorry) of upstaging Lady Gaga. If only she'd arrived inside the belly of a mechanical leopard, she'd have prowled away with it.

Show 100 people this outfit and I'd bet a stuffed toy leopard not one of them would say, "Ooh, Givenchy haute couture!" But that is, indeed, what it is. "Leopard printed silk satin with a draped skirt and tulle bodice", no less. Who knew something so expensive could look so, er, not? Snarl, model's own.

3. Gwyneth Paltrow

As well as nourishing us all with the fountain of wisdom spewed forth in her Goop newsletter, Gwyneth Paltrow is also extremely talented. Who else in the world could don a skintight, slashed-to-the-midriff black catsuit with heels and flicky hair and still manage to look wholesome?

She also performs the astonishing feat of making Cee Lo Green's bizarre ensemble look positively pedestrian. She's like some kind of fashion negative force, sucking the fun out of a 10-metre radius. Don't let her near Gaga, it'd probably cause a black hole.

4. Katy Perry

Perry indulged in the time-honoured way of dispelling marital strife rumours - publicly snogging her husband on the red carpet while wearing a pair of angel wings. Who, frankly, hasn't tried this old trick? However, lest that should be insufficient to quell the gossipmongers, and to rub home the message of family unity, she bought her 90-year-old grandmother along, too. Given her grandmother rocked a diamonte-encrusted walking stick, this also had the unintended consequence of upstaging Perry herself. You go, gran!

5. Rihanna

Rihanna is increasingly sporting a kind of Gaga-lite look. If this outfit was made of actual toilet paper, rather than just looking like it is, then she might have made more impact. However, in the context of incubating eggs, all-over leopard and angel wings, it barely raises an eyebrow. Try harder, Rihanna.
