Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore dies

Northern Irish guitarist was 58

Legendary rock guitarist Gary Moore has died aged 58.

Adam Parsons, who managed Moore during his time in Thin Lizzy, confirmed to BBC News that the Northern Irishman passed away this morning (February 6).

The Belfast-born musician died in his sleep while on holiday in Spain. Born in 1952 as Robert William Gary Moore, the guitarist joined Dublin blues-rock band Skid Row at the age of 16.

While playing with the group, Moore befriended vocalist Phil Lynott, who he later teamed up with again when he replaced Eric Bell in Thin Lizzy in 1974.

Although he only spent a few months with the band during this initial stint, he would later return to the line-up in 1977, to replace Brian Robertson, and in 1978 for the 'Black Rose' tour.

Moore collaborated with a broad range of artists including George Harrison, Trilok Gurtu, Dr. Strangely Strange, Colosseum II, Albert Collins, Jimmy Nail, Mo Foster, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, Jim Capaldi, Vicki Brown, Cozy Powell, the Beach Boys, Ozzy Osbourne and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

He experimented with many musical genres, including rock, jazz, blues, country, electric blues, hard rock and heavy metal.

Moore, who released 20 solo studio albums, had returned to his blues roots in recent years and played in 2006 with former bandmates from Thin Lizzy, who were due to dedicate a performance in Vienna last night to his memory.

His final solo studio album was 2008's 'Bad For You Baby'.

Speaking to BBC News, Bell expressed shock at Moore's death.

"He was so robust, he wasn't a rock casualty, he was a healthy guy. He was a superb player and a dedicated musician," he said.
